ACADEMICS

Algebra I to Algebra II Bridge 

Weeks 4-6 | Students who completed Algebra I | 8:30 am 1:00 pm. | All campuses | $100 per week or $250.00 for Three Weeks

Face-to-face at Berkner 

This summer bridge course is designed to solidify the essential skills students need to have mastered in Algebra 1 to be successful in Algebra 2. Week 1 will focus on functions. Students will identify attributes of functions and represent them from multiple representations. During Week 2, students will focus on solving both one and two-variable equations in addition to solving systems of equations. Lastly, during week 3, students will work on simplifying expressions and factoring, essential skills benefitting all Algebra 2 students.  This is not a remediation course. The program is built to be help to all students, regardless of their performance in Algebra 1 this past school year. This course strengthens foundational skills students will use during their math journey through High School.


Elevate Language & Literacy (Registration is now closed)

Incoming seventh, eighth, and ninth-grade English Learners will have an opportunity to build language and literacy through RISD’s Elevate Literacy summer program.  Students will focus on developing cognitive, social, physical, and emotional well-being through the four language domains and engaging in STEM activities.

 


Ignite

Breakfast and lunch will be provided as well as transportation from the student’s home campus. 

Ignite is a transformational summer opportunity that focuses on improving literacy skills and the social and emotional health of students through STEM, social studies, and literacy programs. Your student will have the opportunity to participate in engaging academic activities. 


SOAR (Registration is now closed)

Weeks 1-6 | Grades 7-9 |  8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | $100/week or $250/three weeks

Identified students may attend at no cost.

Students may enroll in single weeks or in week bundles.

Incoming seventh and eighth-grade students will explore literacy and math through engaging themes.  The SOAR program will ignite the love of learning while strengthening grade-level reading and math skills through engaging activities.

Advanced Learning Creative Academy (Registration is now closed)

AVID Excel Summer Bridge provides rising 7th and 8th grade Excel students a jump start on the school year by allowing intentional time for course introduction and expectations, supply organization and building relationships with teachers and peers. Excel Summer Bridge students become familiar with their new school, teachers, and other course previews. Time is well spent in hands-on activities and high engagement instructional strategies that emphasize important skills of writing, speaking, listening and reading.


Junior High Acceleration (Registration is now closed)

RISD will provide summer programming to students seeking to earn course credit outside the traditional school year. 

 

Online Course Policies & Requirements

  • Current RISD students enrolled in grades 7-8 during the 2021-2022 school year are eligible for enrollment.
  • All students must have daily access to a computer and the internet. 
  • Students may only drop the class before taking the final exam.  
  • Students may take only one course per semester.

Registration begins March 22 at 12:00 p.m. and ends April 9 at 11:59 p.m.  A limited number of spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.   Full tuition must be paid at the time of registration.  Only credit or debit cards will be accepted.  No refunds. 

A price reduction is available to students that qualify for free & reduced lunch.  AVID scholarships are available.

Art, AV, & Technology – Film 101

June 7-17 M-TH | Grades 7-12 | 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. | Free

Students will be tasked with creating their own short film! This will encompass both the pre-production, production, and postproduction process with an overview of what it takes to bring their ideas to life. We will discuss different filming styles and will dive into multiple photography aspects included in the cinema production. We can focus on what the students want to pursue. 

 

Art, AV, & Technology – Intro to Photography

July 12-22 M-TH | Grades 7-12 | 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. | Free

Students will be looking at different photography projects that focus on the students' interests. From lifestyle shoots, to landscape photography, and everything in between. Students will understand the basic mechanics and some simple ways to improve their skills with whatever cell phone or entry level camera they might have at their disposal, learning how to capture the world around them with tools available to them. 

 

Art, AV, & Technology – Animation Basics 101

June 7-17 or July 12-22 M-TH | Grades 7-12 | 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. | Free

Students will have the opportunity to create their own animation! This will include the pre-production planning and the actual production of the short. We will discuss different animation styles and will learn about the different aspects of the animation world. 

 

Aviation – Take Flight!

June 7-17 M-TH | Grades 7-12 | 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. | Free

In this hands-on, interactive camp, students will be immersed in a variety of aviation and aerospace activities.  Activities include: Pilot various drones and learn tips on how to safely enter the world of recreational drone flying; Discover model rocketry and put your creativity to work by designing and launching your own rocket;  Learn the basics of landing an airplane through the use of an FAA approved flight training device (simulator).  Additionally, a variety of guest speakers, from representatives of flight and aircraft maintenance schools, to aviation industry professionals, will share their fascinating career stories and advice to camp-goers.

 

Aviation - On your Mark, Get Set, Drone!

July 12-15 | Grades 7-12 | 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. | Free

In this high-octane camp, students will learn about the new and growing sport of competitive drone racing.  Students will gain an understanding of the basic components of drones through the assembly of actual racing-drones that they will later fly.  Obstacles for the racecourse will be designed and built, and after practice, students will put their newly acquired skills to the test in some fun and friendly competitive drone racing. This is a one-week camp.

 

Biotechnology – Genes, Green, and Glowing Things

June 7-10 or June 14-17 | Grades 7-12 | 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. | Free

Have you ever wondered how scientists can use cells to make things glow? Or how biotechnology can help us diagnose disease or solve crime?  Join us for a week of hands-on biotechnology! Students will build a DNA model, extract DNA from cells, transfer DNA into cells by heat shock transformation, purify green fluorescent protein and make it into a necklace. Students will also apply techniques such as ELISA and spectrophotometry to diagnose simulated disease and solve simulated crime. No prior biotech experience is necessary. This one-week camp is offered in both session one and two.

 

Biotechnology – Medicine, Machines, and Man

Have you ever wondered how technology can help us heal our bodies? Or how we can engineer an artificial limb?  Join us for a week of hands-on biotechnology! Students will work in a team to model a muscle, help heal a broken bone, and clear a blocked artery. Teams will also develop a prototype of an artificial limb. No prior biotech experience is necessary. This one-week camp is offered in both session one and two.

 

Business – Investing in Entrepreneurship

Students will have the opportunity to engage in many group games, activities, and simulations to better understand the world of investing and entrepreneurship over a two-week period. One week will focus on how to build a small business from scratch which may include marketing, business plan writing, managing, and leading your business. The other week will focus on some key aspects of personal financial literacy and budgeting. We will also dive into key investments from the world of real estate, securities, banking.

 

Business, Marketing & Finance – Entrepreneurship 101 "From the Ground Up"

July 12-22 M-TH | Grades 9-12 | 9:00 – 12:30 p.m.

Students will explore "from the ground up" in starting your own business or how to take a product from an idea to being the next big thing.  Students will create a business plan with the 4-P's and the seven functions of Marketing. Each student will present their product or service to a panel of local "Shark Tank" community partner judges for potential success in identifying next steps.  Get a head start in creating your own business before leaving high school and gain experience in Entrepreneurship.

 

Cosmetology – TDLR Test Prep (Current Cosmetology Students Only)

Have you been in class and find yourself doodling?  Well, put that talent to work and learn to draw shapes, squiggles, and cartoons to support your notes in class or online!  Make your Focused Notetaking more meaningful with flair pens learning how to annotate with art to support your main points.  The class will use passages and current events to create a palette to present an overarching idea or chain of events in a lesson. Students will use an 8 to 12 pack of flair pens with a variety of colors per person.

 

Health Science – Have a Heart!

Students will learn the anatomy and physiology of the heart, watch an open heart surgery, learn Basic Life Support (CPR) and get certified, and learn first aid for heart and stroke conditions.

 

Hospitality & Tourism - Hotel Management Boot Camp 101

Students will discover their own leadership styles, develop employability skills, learn time management, team-building exercises and practice customer service in a fun fast-paced environment. Each student will have first-hand experience in all phases of hotel management. We will have a variety of different competitions where students will gain experience in multiple fields ranging from the front desk, banquets, restaurant, server, management, human resources, and sales and at the same time learn more about the variety of career hospitality possibilities.

 

Readiness – Are You Ready for Life?

STEM – Engineering Design

June 7 - 17 M-TH | Grades 7-12|8:30 – 1:00

Week 1: We will learn about the different types of energy and how it is used. After that, we will construct a wind turbine to see how much energy it produces.    

Week 2: We will use civil engineering principles to design and build truss bridges out of toothpicks.   We will have a contest to see what bridge will hold the most weight at the end of the week.

 

UTD Computer Camps

Dates vary | Grades 7-12 | 1 week virtual sessions

UTD is offering multiple summer coding camps at a discounted price of $50 per week for ½ day sessions for RISD students.  Scholarships available to students who qualify for a reduced price.  Camps offered cover multiple coding languages, cyber security, artificial intelligence, and even Minecraft.  There are multiple camps to choose from. 

Here is the 4-step process:

  2. RISD parents should apply with Google form https://bit.ly/utd-risd-s21 to apply for a scholarship towards your camp fee.
  3. Parents will get an email from the RISD-UTD team once they are approved to register.
